Loudoun Healthcare, Leesburg, Va., plans to merge with five-hospital Inova Health System, Falls Church, Va., to expand and upgrade 92-bed Loudoun Hospital Center and other facilities. The announcement comes as for-profit HCA awaits Loudoun County's go-ahead to build a 164-bed competing hospital nearby. The HCA project already has state approval. As proposed, Inova would make an initial payment of $200 million to Loudoun Healthcare to add heart and cancer centers at Loudoun Hospital Center, install 30 beds at its downtown campus, and build four smaller health centers and an urgent-care center. Federal regulators must approve the merger. -- by Tony Fong
