The international division of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations has opened a branch office in eastern France near the border of Switzerland to better support its European clients and improve coordination with other international agencies such as the World Health Organization in nearby Geneva, the JCAHO said. Paul vanOstenberg, executive director of Joint Commission International since 1998, moved to the new office last month -- the international unit's first office abroad -- and will serve as its managing director. A new executive director will be hired and based at the international division's headquarters in Oak Brook, Ill., a JCAHO spokeswoman said. The international division is part of Joint Commission Resources, JCAHO's not-for-profit consulting and educational subsidiary. The division has provided services related to quality improvement and patient-safety enhancement to 10 nations in Europe and has ongoing projects in more than 60 countries around the world, the JCAHO said. -- by John Morrissey
