St. Joseph Outpatient Center in Tacoma, Wash., puts all of Franciscan Health System's outpatient services under one roof-a facility that was built with patients, physicians and staff in mind.
"The concept of consolidating all outpatient services in one facility creates a very patient-friendly environment," says judge Randy Peterson. Other jurors commented on design features intended to create a positive patient experience.
"The exam room was a favorite of the jury with its oval mirror, blue walls and warm mood," says judge Carol Bentel. "I was glad to see a light, airy entry canopy."
Added efficiency and functionality are key features of the design elements, such as staircases that pass for art and wooden awnings that mark patient room doorways-a "way-finding device reminiscent of five-star hotel hallways," designers say.
The brightly colored public spaces are contrasted by the darker, richer hues used in quiet clinical settings.
Judge Edward Huckaby cites the outpatient center's "competent, consistent, yet simple and uncomplicated interior."
