CentraCare Health Plaza's 125-acre campus along the Sauk River in St. Cloud, Minn., has 330,000 square feet of outpatient services and could be expanded to a total of 1 million square feet.
"Designed with the future in mind, this ambulatory-care center has great flexibility for future expansion," says judge Sue Brody.
The health plaza offers specialty services through its cancer treatment center, women's and children's clinic, diabetes and endocrinology center, and kidney dialysis center, among others. The separate outpatient facility eases congestion at St. Cloud Hospital, the judges say.
"This facility exhibits a refined simplicity of forms and materials ... (and has) a clarity that will promote ease of anticipated future growth and change," says judge Peter Bardwell.
The layout of the clinic departments also is designed for flexibility, with examination rooms that can be shared during peak times. This format also allows departments to be expanded with minimal construction costs.
Judge Louis Pounders says, "I appreciated the clarity of design and the elegant manner in which the building was integrated into the natural habitat of its upland savanna site."
