The National Quality Forum's board endorsed a set of 21 hospital-level measures for evaluating the quality of cardiac surgery and post-operative care. Hashed out by a steering committee since January, the measures are intended for public reporting of hospital performance and include incidence of major complications as well as mortality rates for coronary bypass procedures and several other types of heart surgery. Sixteen of the measures were taken from a data-collection initiative sponsored by the Society for Thoracic Surgery. At deadline, the measures had not been posted at the NQF Web site, qualityforum.org. -- by John Morrissey
