Health Management Associates and LifePoint Hospitals said they will trade two hospitals that are geographic outliers in their portfolios but a better fit for the other company. HMA will acquire 56-bed Bartow (Fla.) Memorial Hospital from LifePoint in exchange for 76-bed Williamson (W.Va.) Memorial Hospital. If the deal closes, HMA, Naples, Fla., would own or operate 15 hospitals in Florida out of its total portfolio of 53 hospitals. LifePoint, Brentwood, Tenn., would have two hospitals in West Virginia and one in Florida out of the 30 hospitals it owns or operates. The company's planned acquisition of Province Healthcare Co., expected to close in the first quarter of 2005, would not add any hospitals in Florida or West Virginia. Both hospitals have been recently renovated and both generate revenue of about $30 million annually. -- by Vince Galloro
