The board of 127-bed Gratiot Community Hospital, Alma, Mich., will meet next week to discuss Gratiot's possible acquisition by three-hospital MidMichigan Health, Midland, said Tom DeFauw, Gratiot's president and chief executive officer. MidMichigan paid $10 million in 1999 to acquire 32.8% of Gratiot. DeFauw said the partnership has worked well, "but we're a 50-year-old hospital with a lot of capital needs and now the question is, should we seek a closer affiliation and become wholly owned by MidMichigan." Officials said both provider organizations were profitable. -- by Mark Taylor
