Detroit Medical Center and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute said they will build a $47 million clinical cancer center on DMC's campus as part of a broader agreement to work together on cancer care in the Detroit area. The cancer center will have six operating rooms and a cancer-specific diagnostic imaging room. Construction is set to start in 2005. The Karmanos institute also will purchase space at DMC's Harper University Hospital, Hudson Webber Cancer Research Center and Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center. The agreement also calls for deepening the affiliation between the Karmanos institute and Wayne State University, also in Detroit. Wayne State faculty physicians will teach students and conduct research at facilities covered by the agreement. -- by Vince Galloro
