Mary Anstine has announced her retirement after 10 years as president and CEO of Denver's not-for-profit HealthONE Alliance, a healthcare foundation and joint venture partner in HCA-HealthONE, Denver's largest healthcare provider. Anne Warhover, president and CEO of the Downtown Denver Partnership, will take over Anstine's role in the alliance, a post that concentrates on research, graduate medical education and philanthropy. ... HCA has appointed a new senior management team at Research Medical Center, Kansas City, Mo. Niels Vernegaard has been named CEO, replacing Steven Newton, who left to become CEO of All Saints Medical Centers, Fort Worth, Texas. Vernegaard most recently was president and CEO of HCA's Parkridge Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tenn. Susan Shreeve has become CFO of Research, after serving as CFO of Bayshore Medical Center in Pasadena, Texas. Deborah Pasch becomes chief nursing officer after serving most recently in the same post at CJW Medical Center in Richmond, Va. ... SSM Health Care, St. Louis, has promoted Sherry Mohr to president of SSM St. Joseph Hospital of Kirkwood (Mo.), effective Jan. 31, 2005. Mohr, 39, currently executive vice president and COO at SSM DePaul Health Center, St. Louis, will succeed Carla Baum as St. Joseph's president. Baum has announced her intention to step aside to explore new opportunities within seven-hospital SSM Health Care. Also, Brett Esrock, 39, will join St. Joseph as executive vice president and COO, effective this week. Esrock, 39, has held a similar position at SSM Rehab. He replaces Gaye Smith, who has accepted a job with Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville. ... Garry Scheib has been promoted to the newly reinstated post of COO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, Philadelphia. Scheib, 54, has been senior vice president of the system and executive director of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania; he will continue in the latter position. ... Colleen Koppenhaver has joined Oaklawn Hospital, Marshall, Mich., as CFO. Koppenhaver, 45, who most recently was director of finance for Bon Secours Hampton Roads in Norfolk, Va., replaces Tom Evans, who left the position after 24 years to pursue other opportunities.
Former Justice Department official Deborah Platt Majoras was sworn in as the new chairman of the Federal Trade Commission. President Bush nominated Majoras May 11 to succeed Timothy Muris, who earlier this year announced he would leave the FTC. His resignation became effective Aug. 15. Majoras most recently was a partner in the Washington office of law firm Jones Day. She previously served as deputy assistant attorney general and principal deputy at the Justice Department's antitrust division. ... George Gray will take over management of the Department of Veterans Affairs' hospital network in Florida, south Georgia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands as of Sept. 5. Gray, 58, will replace Elwood Headley, who was reassigned after the VA scrapped a multimillion-dollar computer system being developed at a Florida VA medical center, deciding the project could not be salvaged. The VA had spent $265 million of the project's $472 million budget. Currently, Gray is medical center director of the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System.
