David Brailer, national health information technology coordinator at HHS, was voted the most powerful person in healthcare for 2004 by the readers of Modern Healthcare magazine. The complete list of the magazine's third annual ranking of the 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare appears in today's issue and in a special section on the magazine's Web site, modernhealthcare.com. Brailer, a physician-economist, was catapulted to the top of the list by his newly created, high-profile post. But he was just one of a number of IT professionals and patient-safety advocates dominating this year's ranking, reflecting the healthcare industry's high interest in using information technology to improve quality of care. -- by David Burda
