Sidney Mitchell has resigned as president and CEO of University Hospital in Newark, N.J., citing personal reasons, but will remain as a consultant for three months during the transition to new leadership. Mitchell, 59, is being replaced on an interim basis by Russell Joffe, dean of New Jersey Medical School in Newark. The hospital is the primary teaching center for the medical school. ... Robert Bezanson, 58, has been promoted to president and CEO of three-hospital CoxHealth, Springfield, Mo. He had served as executive vice president and COO. Bezanson replaces Larry Wallis, who retired. ... Mike Uboldi, 51, has been named to the new post of service-area president for Catholic Healthcare West's four Sacramento, Calif., area hospitals. He will retain his current post as president of one of the area hospitals, Mercy San Juan Medical Center, Carmichael. ... Craig McKnight, 53, has been named CFO of 12-hospital Centura Health, Englewood, Colo. McKnight takes over for Jay Picerno, who was named the company's COO in March. McKnight previously was CFO at Hillcrest HealthCare System, Tulsa, Okla. ... David Stire has been named president and CEO of Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Okla., replacing Larry Minden, who retired. Stire had been executive vice president of finance for parent Jane Phillips Health Corp. ... Edward Nawrocki, 38, has been promoted to president of St. Luke's Quakertown (Pa.) Hospital from associate vice president of operations. He replaces Fred Sprissler, 57, who became senior vice president of corporate services. ... He had served as the Southern California policy liaison for the California Department of Health Services. ... Lou Shapiro, 44, has been named to the new post of COO of the clinical enterprise at Geisinger Health System, Danville, Pa. He had been chief administrative officer of Geisinger Clinic. ... Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System, Lenexa, Kan., has named Richard Lopes to the new position of chief clinical transformation officer. Lopes, 53, a physician, will direct the development and implementation of new patient care-delivery systems. Lopes had been vice president of medical operations at Denver-based Catholic Health Initiatives. ... Michael Salter, 37, has been named COO of Park Plaza Hospital, Houston. He had served as associate administrator of HCA Oklahoma University Medical Center, Oklahoma City. Salter replaces Ed Banos, who became CEO of North Shore Medical Center, Miami. ... Two HCA hospital executives in Texas have switched positions. Jay Woodall, COO of Corpus Christi (Texas) Medical Center, has taken over from Beryl Ramsey as CEO of Texas Orthopedic Hospital, Houston, while Ramsey takes Woodall's old post. ... Michael Drake, 54, vice president of health affairs at the University of California, has won the Herbert W. Nickens, M.D., Award of the Association of American Medical Colleges for what the AAMC termed his "tireless efforts over the past 35 years to enhance diversity in the medical profession." The award is named for the founding vice president of what is now the AAMC Division of Diversity Policy and Programs.
