Bon Secours Health System said it signed a letter of intent to sell its only two Florida hospitals to investor-owned Health Management Associates, Naples, Fla. Bon Secours, a Roman Catholic system based in Marriottsville, Md., did not release the terms of the sale of the two hospitals -- Bon Secours-St. Joseph Healthcare Group, Port Charlotte, and Bon Secours-Venice (Fla.) Hospital. The system said it hopes to negotiate a definitive agreement and receive regulatory approvals "over the next several months." The deal would leave Bon Secours with 22 hospitals, including joint ventures. For HMA, closing the deal would give it 16 hospitals in Florida. The company also has certificate-of-need approvals to build two other hospitals in the state. HMA owns or operates 52 hospitals in 16 states overall. -- by Vince Galloro
