The Hospital Council of Western Pennsylvania, as part of a strategic planning process, is considering a merger with the statewide Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania. Ian Rawson, president and chief executive officer of the hospital council, said the organization has begun considering its options in light of his previously announced plans to retire on Oct. 1 after seven years as its leader. The discussions with HAP are ongoing and are taking no clear direction, Rawson said. The council is "financially stable and can remain autonomous, so the question is how to get the greatest synergies out of a metropolitan hospital association and a state hospital association. That's what we're exploring," he said. At deadline, HAP officials could not be reached for comment. -- by Cinda Becker
