Independence Blue Cross is a not-for-profit corporation that provides healthcare coverage to 2.8 million people.
Vincent Parnell, M.D., a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, has been named to the newly created position of surgeon in chief at Schneider Children's Hospital.
Parnell will continue to serve as chief of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, but will now oversee all of the hospital's surgeons. He is a graduate of the College of Medicine, State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn.
The hospital has traditionally had full-time chiefs in the medical specialties, but now there will be a greater focus on surgical subspecialties, including pediatric cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, general surgery, urology, and ear, nose and throat surgery, said Philip Lanzkowsky, M.D., executive director of Schneider Children's Hospital.
"A pediatric surgery department headed by a pediatric surgeon of Dr. Parnell's caliber ensures the highest quality of care and distinguishes Schneider Children's Hospital from other institutions," Lanzkowsky said.
