Maryland General Hospital, Baltimore, has been dismissed as a defendant in a lawsuit brought by a former hospital laboratory worker who alleged she contracted HIV at the hospital when she was splashed with contaminated blood. Judge Andre Davis of U.S. District Court in Baltimore said he would specify reasons for the dismissal in a forthcoming opinion. Davis ruled that the worker's case could proceed against a former lab administrator and the manufacturer of a blood analyzer. Maryland General's laboratory has been undergoing review and overhaul after the disclosure that nearly 500 patients received possibly incorrect HIV and hepatitis C test results from the lab. State and federal regulators are monitoring its progress. -- by Tony Fong
