New York's health department is investigating three patient deaths in the past two months at Nassau Health Care Corp., East Meadow, N.Y., which operates Nassau County's public hospital and related healthcare facilities. According to news reports, a woman died following weight-reduction surgery at 481-bed Nassau University Medical Center; a dialysis patient bled to death in the shower at an extended-care facility; and a man died after falling out of bed at a nursing home. Beset with financial problems, the quasi-public corporation is in the midst of a turnaround attempt. Nassau spokeswoman Shelley Lotenberg confirmed that regulators were investigating the deaths and said results of the review would be made public when it's complete. The hospital's surgery department chairman has directed the surgeon who performed the gastric-bypass operation to refrain from elective procedures at the hospital until the investigation is complete, Lotenberg said. Citing patient confidentiality laws, she would not release further details. -- by Jeff Tieman
