HealthSouth Corp., Birmingham, Ala., named Robert May, its former acting chief executive officer, as chairman of its board, a move that's been expected for several days. May, a company director since October 2002, was interim CEO from March 2003 until the appointment of former HCA executive Jay Grinney as CEO in May. Acting Chairman Joel Gordon, who agreed to serve in the position while the company remade its management team following a multibillion-dollar accounting scandal, will remain a director and receive the title chairman emeritus. HealthSouth also said that Charles Elson, an expert in corporate governance, has agreed to join the company's board as of Sept. 1. Elson, 44, is director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance at the University of Delaware and vice chairman of the American Bar Association's Committee on Corporate Governance. He has been an adviser to HealthSouth since January 2002. -- by Julie Piotrowski
