Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County, Rock Springs, Wyo., sued former respiratory therapy director Janice Tripp in civil court seeking the return of $1.15 million that Tripp allegedly embezzled from the hospital from 1998 through April of this year. Tripp, a Memorial employee since 1977, has pleaded not guilty to criminal charges and is scheduled to go on trial Aug. 3. She allegedly filed phony orders for disposable supplies that never arrived. Computer records date back only to 1998, so the hospital also will audit paper records in an effort to determine the full extent of the possible fraud, said John Ferry, Memorial's chief executive officer. "It looks like it was something that accelerated in recent years," Ferry said. "Early on, it was minimal." The 65-bed hospital reported revenue of $53 million in 2003. -- by Susanna Moon
