Welcome to our second annual supplement profiling the winners of the CEO IT Achievement Award, sponsored by Modern Healthcare and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society. On the following pages, you'll meet the three winners of the 2004 awards: G. Richard Hastings, president and CEO, St. Luke's Health System, Kansas City, Mo.; Judith Pelham, president and CEO of Trinity Health, Novi, Mich.; and Leonard Schaeffer, chairman and CEO, WellPoint Health Networks, Thousand Oaks, Calif.
A panel of five judges selected Hastings, Pelham and Schaeffer from a pool of 44 nominees. A list of the 41 other nominees can be found on p. 12. We sincerely thank all of them for their participation.
The judges included two CEOs chosen by Modern Healthcare-the winners of last year's CEO IT Achievement Awards-and three CIOs chosen by HIMSS. The list of judges appears below, and we thank them for their work and the tough and insightful decisions they had to make while reviewing the nominations.
The panel used three criteria to review each nominee:
* The CEO demonstrated leadership and commitment to using information technol-ogy to advance his or her healthcare organization's strategic goals.
* The CEO helped achieve measurable results through leadership and commitment to information technology in his or her organization.
* The CEO has shared his or her healthcare organization's information technology experiences to benefit peers and other members of the healthcare industry.
The judges rated the nominees on how well they met the three criteria, using a 10-point scale for each one. A perfect score was 30.
A copy of the criteria, a list of factors to consider under each criteria.
Modern Healthcare and HIMSS announced this year's award competition on Jan. 19, and the deadline for submissions was March 8. The magazine announced the winners in the April 26 issue (p. 20).
