HHS announced the three states where a demonstration project will be conducted to test the new definition of homebound for Medicare beneficiaries receiving home health benefits. Those states are Colorado, Massachusetts and Missouri. The Medicare modernization act authorized the project, which will determine the cost-impact of changing rules that currently require that time spent away from the home be "infrequent or of short duration." The demonstration project removes a limitation based on actual time spent away from home. Up to 15,000 beneficiaries will be eligible for the two-year project, which will begin in the fall, HHS said. -- by Tony Fong
