The CMS has pushed back the deadline for hospitals to request using a more recent cost-reporting period for purposes of redistributing residency slots. The deadline is now June 14, 10 days beyond the original June 4 deadline. The Medicare modernization act requires the CMS to reduce resident caps for hospitals that have not filled all of the residency slots allotted to them and to redistribute the slots to facilities that want more residents. The CMS will redistribute 75% of unused resident positions from teaching hospitals below their caps to hospitals needing more resident slots. Rural hospitals with less than 250 beds are exempted from the provision. -- by Tony Fong
