Bridges to Excellence, an employer-backed initiative supported by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, said it will start paying participating physicians $50 per qualified patient for investments in information technology that improve patient care. In addition, Bridges to Excellence said it has expanded its activities to a fourth metropolitan area, Albany-Schenectady, N.Y., which will be the first to participate in all three of the group's pay-for-performance programs. The group was launched in 2003 with programs to reward appropriate diabetes and cardiovascular care in Cincinnati and Louisville, Ky. The IT incentives program began as a pilot in Boston last year and as of today will become an initiative-wide offering, called Physician Office Link. Meanwhile, Boston physicians received their first checks for participating in the IT pilot and the diabetes program.
