HHS said it will form a task force of its top officials to explore ways to encourage innovation in medical technology. The panel will be made up of CMS Administrator Mark McClellan; Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Lester Crawford, acting commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration; and Elias Zerhouni, director of the National Institutes of Health. Headed by Crawford, the panel will issue a report later this year on ways to expedite the development and availability of biological products and medical devices. HHS is seeking public comment until Aug. 23. A notice will be published in the May 24 Federal Register. -- by Tony Fong
