Bohn Allen, a general surgeon in Arlington, Texas, is the new president of the 39,500-member Texas Medical Association. "The goal of my presidency is to re-energize and strengthen the pride, the professionalism, and the hope of physicians. They've been beaten down so badly over the past 15 years," Allen says. He replaces Charles Bailey Jr., a Houston plastic surgeon. ... Donald Wilson announced that he will retire by year-end as president of the Kansas Hospital Association, a post he has held since 1982. The association's board will make a recommendation regarding a successor for Wilson, 64, at its June meeting.
Robert Klint, chairman and former president and CEO of SwedishAmerican Health System Corp., Rockford, Ill., died March 24, at the age of 61, after a three-year battle with colon cancer. He had served as the chief executive from 1989 to 2001. Klint was a pediatric cardiologist and also held advanced degrees in economics and business. "Under his vision and leadership, SwedishAmerican earned several quality awards for our clinical excellence. During his personal battle with cancer he reminded us that hope and prayer were essential components of good medicine," says Sharon Whelan, a patient advocate at SwedishAmerican. ... Steven Newton has been named president of All Saints Medical Centers, Fort Worth, Texas, replacing Patrick Flynn, who left to become CEO of Wilson N. Jones Regional Health System in Sherman, Texas. Newton, 44, has been president and CEO of Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., and had been senior vice president at Health Midwest, which was sold to HCA in
April 2003. ... Warren, Mich.-based St. John Health promoted CFO and Senior Vice President Paul Van Tiem to COO, replacing Michael Rowan, who left to become COO of Catholic Health Initiatives in Denver. Van Tiem, 48, is being replaced by Patrick McGuire, 43, vice president of finance at the eight-hospital system owned by St. Louis-based Ascension Health. ... John Harney, 52, has been promoted to executive vice president of NYU Hospitals Center in New York from COO. ... Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Pittsburgh, has promoted Robert Frank, 48, to senior vice president and CFO from vice president. Frank replaces Robert Horn, 57, who has been promoted to executive vice president and COO. ... Bill Walter, 62, will step down as CEO of Maury Regional Hospital in Columbia, Tenn., on Sept. 1, but will stay on until 2006 to focus on strategic planning, he says. He has headed the hospital for 30 years. ... David Brooks was named COO of 369-bed Providence Everett (Wash.) Medical Center, a position that had remained unfilled since 2001. Brooks, 42, was previously senior vice president and COO of Central DuPage Health, Winfield, Ill. ... North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System promoted Susan Browning, 35, to the new position of deputy executive director of North Shore University Hospital at Forest Hills (N.Y.). She had been the system's vice president of network operations. ... John Quinn, 50, has been named CEO of Spalding Regional Medical Center, Griffin, Ga. He had served as COO of South Fulton Medical Center, East Point, Ga. Quinn replaces John Snow. ... Ann Campbell, 54, has been named chief nursing officer of Virtua Health, Marlton, N.J., replacing Joan Eddy, who retired. Campbell has been vice president of patient care and interim COO at Virtua Memorial Hospital, Mount Holly, N.J.
Swope Health Services, a Kansas City, Mo.-based primary- and behavioral-care system, has named J. Cornelius Brown, 53, as vice president of operations, replacing Ralph Caro, who resigned to pursue other opportunities. Brown previously was president and CEO of Dallas Southwest Medical Center from 2000 to 2003 after its acquisition.
