Tenet Healthcare Corp., Santa Barbara, Calif., said it has signed a definitive agreement to sell 243-bed Brownsville (Texas) Medical Center to not-for-profit Valley Baptist Health System, Harlingen, Texas. Tenet said terms of the deal would be disclosed at closing, which is expected to occur by June 30 pending regulatory approvals. The Brownsville hospital is one of 27 hospitals that Tenet slated for divestiture in January, the company's second divestiture program in less than a year. It is the first hospital on the January list for which Tenet has announced a buyer. Tenet owns or operates 98 hospitals. It plans to sell or close 31 of those and to open two new hospitals this quarter. -- by Vince Galloro
