Travis County (Texas) voters approved the creation of a healthcare district to support indigent care. The vote was 55% to 45%. The district will assume ownership of Brackenridge and Children's hospitals from the city of Austin, Texas. It is expected to begin operating Oct. 1 with a budget of approximately $76 million, about $46 million of which will come from local property taxes, said Clarke Heidrick, chairman of a steering committee that promoted the district. -- by Mary Chris Jaklevic
