Life can be tough for administrators, even those in Maui. John Schaumburg is stepping down just two years after taking over as CEO of Maui Memorial Medical Center in Wailuku, Hawaii, on a permanent basis. "I'm getting tired," Schaumburg tells the Maui News. "This is a job that's on the firing line, and it's definitely under fire. It has been since the day I started, and I'm just beat." Schaumburg will remain with the Hawaii Health Systems Corp., which manages the state's hospital system. ... Grant Wicklund has been hired as senior vice president and chief administrative officer of MedCath Corp., which operates 13 heart hospitals nationwide. Wicklund, 51, has been with Tenet Healthcare Corp., Santa Barbara, Calif., where he had been responsible for recruitment, retention, human resources, information systems and leadership development. ... St. Thomas Health Services, Nashville, promoted Thomas Gintzig, president and CEO of Middle Tennessee Medical Center, Murfreesboro, to executive vice president and COO of the five-hospital system. He will retain the hospital CEO post. ... Michael Young resigned as president and CEO of 520-bed Lancaster (Pa.) General Hospital, citing undisclosed personal reasons. Young, 47, had been with the hospital for 18 years. Officials did not name an interim president or announce a timeline for finding a successor. ... Randy Cason, 40, is the new interim administrator and CEO of St. Vincent Medical Center-North in Sherwood, Ark. The hospital was formerly led by John Hutton, who also serves as senior vice president of network and development for St. Vincent Health System, Little Rock, Ark. Cason had been CEO of Southwest Regional Medical Center in Little Rock, owned by Health Management Associates. ... Baptist Hospital, Pensacola, Fla., promoted COO Bob Murphy to administrator. Murphy, 37, started at the hospital 15 years ago as a nurse-paramedic aboard its LifeFlight helicopter. He left the hospital to attend law school and returned in 1998, becoming COO two years ago. ... Susan Davis, a registered nurse, has been appointed president and CEO of St. Vincent's Medical Center, Bridgeport, Conn., replacing William Riordan, who retired last year. Davis had ben CEO of Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. ... Sean Gehle has been named vice president of advocacy at Ascension Health-Michigan. Gehle, 35, replaces Frank Brock Jr., who retired. ... Mary Ann Eldred, 58, has been named executive vice president and COO of Finger Lakes Health, Geneva, N.Y. She had served as senior vice president of operations and patient care for Bronson Healthcare Group, Kalamazoo, Mich. ... Evan Dillard, 50, is the new COO of Tallahassee (Fla.) Memorial Hospital, replacing Ed Carney. Dillard had been president of Walker Baptist Medical Center in Jasper, Ala.
Wright Caughman, 55, a top faculty official at the Emory School of Medicine in Atlanta, has been named director of the affiliated Emory Clinic, the largest medical group practice in Georgia with about 787 physicians, effective Sept. 1. Caughman, a dermatologist, will continue to serve on the medical school faculty in a half-time position managing the clinical leadership and administration of the not-for-profit medical group.
Charles Havekost has been named CIO at HHS. The position is within the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Budget, Technology and Finance. He will also hold the position of deputy assistant secretary of information resources management. In his new position, Havekost will direct HHS information technology resources, program systems and infrastructure. Havekost has been program manager for grants.gov, a federal Internet initiative.
