"New York's hospitals are so under-used that they run radio ads trolling for new patients virtually 24/7. Yet Mayor (Michael Bloomberg says) `We do not want to close any hospitals, and I'm confident that we will not have to close any hospitals.' Of course he doesn't want to. No politician wants to incur the wrath of the healthcare workers union-or of powerful hospital directors. ... Practically the entire $2.6 billion spike in city-funded municipal spending next year is to support state, federal and contractual mandates-such as Medicaid. Should those services be cut? ... Mayor Mike hasn't even tried to economize."
