Two South Carolina health systems -- Palmetto Health, Columbia, and Greenville (S.C.) Hospital System -- have announced a partnership with two state universities to form the South Carolina Health Sciences Collaborative. The venture with Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, and the University of South Carolina, Columbia, is aimed at increasing the partners' participation in medical research. Each partner has committed to invest $2 million annually in the partnership for the next 10 years. Their $8 million annual investment qualifies the partnership for a state matching program that will mean another $8 million annually, or $160 million over 10 years. The not-for-profit research foundation also will seek federal, state and private research grants. -- by Vince Galloro
