The University of Pennsylvania Health System signed a letter of intent to sell 140-bed Phoenixville (Pa.) Hospital to investor-owned Community Health Systems, Brentwood, Tenn., for undisclosed terms. The sale is subject to approval by Pennsylvania's attorney general, Chester County (Pa.) Orphan's Court and the Federal Trade Commission. UPHS said both parties will seek to close the deal by July 1. Phoenixville, serving Philadelphia's western suburbs, merged with UPHS in 1997. UPHS operates three other hospitals. Community operates six hospitals in Pennsylvania. -- by Mary Chris Jaklevic
