Ralph Feigin, M.D., chairman of the department of pediatrics at the Baylor College of Medicine and physician-in-chief for Texas Children's Hospital for the past 27 years, has been named the 2004 recipient of the TIAA-CREF Distinguished Medical Educator Award.
TIAA-CREF is a New York-based pension investment firm that specializes in employees in education and teaching hospitals.
Feigin has served as director of the largest pediatric residency program in the United States and has trained more than 1,000 medical residents, more than half of whom have pursued subspecialty pediatric training, according to a statement released by the company. They include full-time faculty members at 114 of the nation's 125 medical schools, 45 section heads of U.S. pediatric departments, eight current pediatric chairs and two current deans of national medical schools.
The award has a $10,000 honorarium and includes 20 scholarships for underprivileged youths to attend a medical school summer camp at the John P. McGovern Museum of Health & Medical Science in Houston.
