Jury awards in medical malpractice cases remained almost unchanged between 2000 and 2002, the most recent year for which statistics were available, according to a national study. Jury Verdict Research, which maintains a national database of more than 213,000 verdicts and settlements in personal injury claims, said the median medical malpractice jury award was $1.01 million in 2002. That represents a small increase over the $1 million median in the two previous years. Doctors' groups have been pushing for medical malpractice reform in recent years, arguing that huge jury awards are causing premiums to skyrocket. -- by Michael Romano
