The House of Representatives named its members to a congressional negotiating team that will try to iron out differences in the budget blueprints passed by each chamber earlier this month. The Senate is expected to name its conference committee members later today. The House committee members are Jim Nussle (R-Iowa), Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and John Spratt (D-S.C.). Among the issues the committee will try to settle is the House's proposed Medicaid cuts of up to $2.2 billion over five years; the Senate proposal has no cuts to the program. In anticipation of the creation of the conference committee, letters dated March 29 signed by 20 medical associations and lobbying organizations were sent to Congress urging members to do away with the Medicaid cuts. The committee will hold its first meeting this afternoon. -- by Tony Fong
