Premier, San Diego, is closing its office in Oak Brook, Ill., and consolidating its operations into its Charlotte, N.C.-based center over the next two years, starting July 1, Modern Healthcare has learned. Premier officials confirmed the closing, which is scheduled to be formally announced tomorrow. In a news release provided exclusively to Modern Healthcare, Premier said it is cutting costs by operating fewer sites and also cited the relative cost advantage of Charlotte over the Chicago area. The San Diego office will remain, Premier said. The three offices are a legacy of the alliance's three predecessor purchasing alliances, which merged in the mid-1990s. The Oak Brook center employs 270 people, who are mostly engaged in supply chain and group purchasing functions -- it is unclear what will happen to those employees. The Charlotte center, which primarily handles information systems and data management, employs 400 workers. The Premier hospital alliance is owned by more than 200 not-for-profit hospitals; its 1,500 member hospitals purchase $17 billion annually through its group contracts. -- by Vince Galloro
