Merit Health Systems, Louisville, Ky., has acquired Nix Health Care System, San Antonio, which includes a 181-bed hospital, an outpatient clinic and a home health agency. Terms were not disclosed. The Nix acquisition gives privately held Merit its second hospital, along with the former Grant Hospital, Chicago, which has since been renamed Lincoln Park Hospital. Nix also was a privately held, for-profit system. In other acquisitions news, West Virginia University Hospitals, Morgantown, and two hospitals in the state's eastern panhandle said they have begun exclusive negotiations on a possible merger. City Hospital, Martinsburg, and Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, would serve as teaching hospitals for a branch campus of the university's Health Sciences Center being developed in Martinsburg. No deadline has been set for completing negotiations. -- by Vince Galloro
