Three-hospital Swedish Medical Center, Seattle, plans to expand into nearby Issaquah, Wash. -- first building a free-standing emergency care complex, which doesn't require regulatory approval, at a cost of up to $20 million and then constructing a 175-bed hospital around that complex within several years. Swedish said it is filing a letter of intent with the state to apply for certificate-of-need approval for the hospital. In a news release, Swedish President and Chief Executive Officer Richard Peterson said Issaquah, about 16 miles east of Seattle, remains "significantly underserved when it comes to specialty and emergency healthcare services." -- by Susanna Moon
