The merged health insurance association formerly known as the AAHP-HIAA unveiled a new name -- America's Health Insurance Plans, or AHIP -- and a new focus on promoting clinical quality through evidence-based medicine. AHIP officials said the new name represents the group's greater breadth, including both managed-care and traditional indemnity insurers. The mission statement calls for health plans and other healthcare stakeholders to work together to implement performance-based reimbursement that compensates providers for meeting measurable and agreed-upon quality goals. Officials said they hope to work with Congress, the states and other private sector groups to push the AHIP's new quality agenda, which includes greater funding for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the creation of an independent public-private organization with the sole mission of broadly disseminating objective, consumer-friendly information about the latest advances in evidence-based medical practices. -- by Todd Sloane
