* Stephen Mason, senior executive vice president and COO of Texas Health Resources, Arlington, is resigning his position to climb the career ladder.
Mason, 55, was named president and CEO of BayCare Health System, Clearwater, Fla., a system with nine hospitals in the Tampa Bay area. Mason succeeds Frank Murphy effective May 1.
"BayCare and Texas Health are of similar size and have similar values," Mason says. "Their missions and focus are similar. From a career point of view, this was a nice development for me."
Mason says he looks forward to addressing the issues that challenge most systems, including caring for the uninsured, increasing Medicare reimbursement rates and gaining access to capital.
Mason has more than 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry, including 12 years with Harris Methodist Health System, which merged with Presbyterian Healthcare Resources in 1997 to form Texas Health, where he oversees operations at 13 acute- care hospitals.
"Steve's contributions to Texas Health Resources' success have been significant," says Doug Hawthorne, president and CEO at Texas Health. "I will miss him at my leadership side."
Mason's career in Texas was highlighted by an emphasis on patient safety and increased efforts in information system infrastructure, Hawthorne says.
