Physician offices and freestanding surgery centers are experiencing greater growth in volume than hospital-based ambulatory surgery centers, hospital cooperative VHA said in a new report.
Because hospitals also have seen growth in outpatient surgeries, many have been unaware of doctors' increasing market share. Physicians already own a majority of urgent-care and freestanding diagnostic imaging facilities and are beginning to enter the specialty hospital market, VHA said.
With physician competition likely to intensify, hospitals must cultivate working relationships with doctors that take into account the local market, physician needs and the hospital's strategic direction, VHA said.
