A group of Phoenix-area doctors and investors plan to break ground in April on a $10 million emergency-only hospital in Gilbert, Ariz., according to the Business Journal of Phoenix. The 31-bed, 32,000-square-foot Gilbert Emergency Hospital is expected to open in January 2005, with the goal of seeing every patient within 30 minutes of arrival, compared with an average six-hour wait at neighboring hospitals' emergency rooms, the newspaper reported. The closest hospital from the planned Gilbert facility is 239-bed Banner Baywood Medical Center, about seven miles away in Mesa. Catholic Healthcare West plans to open a 120-bed hospital six miles away in December 2005. -- by Laura B. Benko
