It's a problem, but some help is available through an outreach effort -- Minority Intervention and Kidney Education -- by the not-for-profit American Kidney Fund, based in Rockville, M.D.
If you're a physician leader whose hospital or group sees Hispanic patients with chronic kidney problems -- and chances are that they do -- the American Kidney Fund has a toll-free help line for Spanish-speaking callers, 866-300-2900.
Hispanics have twice the risk of kidney disease as non-Hispanic Caucasians, and nearly one in eight of the 400,000 people in the U.S. with end-stage renal disease are Hispanic, according to the organization.
