University of Pittsburgh (Pa.) Medical Center said specialty chemical company Rohn and Haas Co. has donated a subsidiary, RheoGene, Norristown, Pa., to the hospital. The donation, valued at $30 million, includes biological materials, compounds, equipment, intellectual property, research, and commercial agreements and licenses. RheoGene has developed technology used in gene-based therapies and is developing other pharmaceutical discovery agents for research. A state grant helped UPMC retain a number of RheoGene employees. The company plans to open a laboratory in Pittsburgh this year. -- by Cinda Becker
