Healthcare Purchasing Partners International has agreed to buy the group purchasing assets of Healthcare Services of New England, Quincy, Mass., for undisclosed terms. The deal, expected to close within 90 days, does not require regulatory approval, officials said. HPPI, Irving, Texas, is owned by VHA and University HealthSystem Consortium and provides group purchasing services to more than 8,000 healthcare organizations throughout the country. VHA and Universal also jointly own group purchasing giant Novation. Under an 8-year-old partnership, members of the New England group have purchased supplies through HPPI contracts, which are negotiated and managed by Novation. HPPI contracts generated more than $2.3 billion in purchases in 2003, including about $360 million from the New England group. -- by Cinda Becker
