Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas plans to spend $160 million to $180 million on an expansion to add about 180 new beds. The project would be the largest ever at the 692-bed hospital, built 38 years ago. Work is scheduled to begin in June on a three-story parking garage. Construction of a new six-story patient tower is expected to kick off in late 2006, officials said. Meanwhile, the University of Alabama at Birmingham is close to winning approval from the state university system to pay about $8.3 million for land that would be the future site of a hospital for women and infants. The $111 million facility, a joint venture with Children's Hospital of Alabama, is scheduled to open in June 2006, officials said. -- by Michael Romano
