Patricia Nolan, M.D., director of the Rhode Island Department of Health, and Melissa McDiarmid, M.D., a professor of medicine, epidemiology and preventive medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, have been named by HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson as chairwomen of two advisory committees at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Nolan will head a committee advising the director of the National Center for Environmental Health.
McDiarmid will chair the Board of Scientific Counselors, Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.
Both Nolan and McDiarmid have master's degrees in public health. The announcements were made Thursday.
