Michael Rowan has been named executive vice president and COO at Catholic Health Initiatives, Denver, effective March 1. Rowan, 45, currently holds the same position at St. John Health, a unit of Ascension Health, which operates eight hospitals in Michigan. Rowan fills the position vacated by Kevin Lofton, who became president and CEO of the 68-hospital system in August. ... Union County Hospital, Anna, Ill., has named James Farris, 48, CEO. He had served as assistant CEO of Heartland Regional Medical Center, Marion, Ill. Farris replaces Jim Sato, who was interim CEO. ... Allan Stipe, 56, who first joined HCA's two-hospital Sunrise Health in Las Vegas in 1987, announced he will retire from the post of Sunrise's market president and president and CEO of its 655-bed Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center within the next two months. ... Meg Cleary, 49, was named president and CEO of 100-bed Northern Nevada Medical Center in Sparks, Nev., by owner Universal Health Services, effective Jan. 26. Cleary, 49, most recently was president of 103-bed Woodland Healthcare of Woodland, Calif. She replaces James Pagels, who died in a vehicular accident in August 2003 at age 49. ... Michael Barger Sr. is the new CFO of Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, Alexandria, Va. Barger, 54, replaces Bill Bane, who is now CFO of Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, Fairfax, Va. ... Universal Health Services, King of Prussia, Pa., has promoted Charles Boyle, 43, to controller from assistant vice president of corporate accounting, and Cheryl Ramagano, 41, to treasurer from assistant treasurer.
David Alexander, 49, president of DeVos Children's Hospital, Grand Rapids, Mich., has been named chairman of the American Hospital Association's Section for Maternal and Child Health. The committee is responsible for advising the AHA on strategies, public policy issues and advocacy positions in the maternal and child health field. ... Mary White, president and chief executive officer at Swedish Medical Center, Englewood, Colo., has been named chairwoman of the AHA's Section for Metropolitan Hospitals. The committee is a forum for suburban and urban hospitals to discuss common interests and to participate in the AHA's policy process.
Daniel Starks, 49, has been named chairman and CEO of St. Jude Medical, St. Paul, Minn. He had served as president and COO. He replaces Terry Shepherd, 50, who retired. ... Nicolaos Madias, recent interim dean of Tufts University School of Medicine, has been named chairman of medicine at Tufts-affiliated Caritas St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, Boston. He replaces Kenneth MacDonnell, who will stay on as chairman emeritus and continue his pulmonary medicine practice at Caritas as well as an academic appointment at Tufts. ... The federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality named Bruce Nedrow Calonge, chief medical officer of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the state epidemiologist, as chairman of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. Calonge had been on the preventive medicine panel for the past two years. Calonge, an associate professor of family medicine and of preventive medicine and biometrics at the University of Colorado in Denver, has served on the task force for two years. "We are very pleased to have Dr. Calonge assume the leadership of the task force," says AHRQ Director Carolyn Clancy. "(Calonge) brings formidable expertise in public health at the state and national levels and a unique perspective in preventive medicine." Calonge replaces Alfred Berg, who will continue as a member of the group for an additional year.
A major behind-the-scenes player in Medicare reform negotiations is leaving the U.S. Congress to start his own health policy consulting firm. John McManus will vacate his job as staff director of the House Ways and Means Committee's health subcommittee on Feb. 6. McManus was instrumental in passing the $400 billion Medicare reform measure last year. In addition to leading the policy development, he worked closely with Ways and Means Chairman Bill Thomas (R-Calif.), who also served as chairman of the House-Senate Medicare conference committee that wrote the bill. The McManus Group will advise healthcare clients on policy analysis and strategic lobbying. He expects to work with hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms and medical device manufacturers.
Adrienne Alvarez, 37, has been appointed to the new position of senior vice president of human resources at Boca Raton, Fla.-based Promise Healthcare, a long-term acute-care hospital company. She had been regional human resources manager for Charles Schwab & Co. ... Michael Hiffa, 49, is the new vice president of human resources and Michael Brohm, 47, is the new vice president of operations at eight-hospital Regency Hospital Co., Atlanta, a long-term acute-care company. Hiffa replaces Jim Caswell, who becomes vice president of hospital recruiting, while Brohm replaces Ann Molitor, who becomes vice president of clinical operations.
