Nurses at Pan American Hospital, Miami, voted 152-4 to join the Service Employees International Union, saying they needed to organize to fight for better work benefits. An additional 600 employees are scheduled to vote on unionization Jan. 26. The votes come after Executive Director Vicente Sanchez, who took over the top spot in October 2003, announced several steps to revive the hospital's finances. According to local news media reports, hospital employees said that under Sanchez's plan each employee would lose a week of vacation, sick days would be cut to 6 from 15 and sick time would no longer accrue year to year. Hospital officials would not comment on the matter. -- by Patrick Reilly
