The American College of Healthcare Executives selected James Springfield as its 2004 Robert S. Hudgens Memorial Award winner for young healthcare executive of the year and Larry Mathis as its 2004 Gold Medal Award winner for career service. The awards will be presented March 1 at the group's annual congress in Chicago. Springfield, 39, is president and CEO of Valley Baptist Health System, Harlingen, Texas. He also serves on the board of the Texas Association of Voluntary Hospitals, the Texas Institute for Health Policy and Research and VHA Southwest. Mathis, 60, was CEO and president of Methodist Health Care System, Houston, from 1983 to 1997 before retiring and is a past president of the American Hospital Association. He was ACHE chairman in 1997. Mathis now works as a healthcare consultant for his wife's firm, D. Peterson & Associates, Houston. -- by Joe Mantone
