The keynote address of Donald Berwick, M.D., president and CEO of the Boston-based Institute for Healthcare Improvement, will be available live via the Internet Tuesday from the two-day "Crossing the Quality Chasm Summit" hosted by the Institute of Medicine in Washington, D.C.
Berwick, a member of the IOM Committee on Quality of Health Care in America that issued the landmark 1999 report, "To Err is Human" and the follow up 2001 "Crossing the Quality Chasm," will speak at 10:30 a.m. EST.
Other plenary sessions during the two-day meeting also will be webcast, but the work of the five breakout groups on improving quality of care for patients with asthma, depression, diabetes, heart failure and pain management problems cannot be webcast, according to Christine Stencel, an IOM spokesperson.
A schedule of summit events and a link to the free webcast is available at http://www.nationalacademies.org/onpi/schedule.html#web0106. Listeners will need RealPlayer software. A third report in the IOM quality series, "Patient Safety: Achieving a New Standard for Care," was released online in November and should be available in book form later this year.
