Illinois and North Carolina announced their holiday gifts to taxpayers in the form of Medicaid fraud recoveries for fiscal 2003. The Illinois Department of Public Aid said its investigations netted $27 million in overpayments that have been repaid to the state, a 38% increase compared to 2002. The department said its Medicaid fraud detection team will take part in a pilot partnership program with Medicare investigators in 2004. North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper said fraud investigators there recovered $14 million during the 12 months ended Sept. 30, a 30% increase from the previous year. -- by Vince Galloro
